AmeriCorps NCCC Class 20 Corps Member Spotlight: Chris Hyde

Chris Hyde, from Canton, Connecticut is serving on team Maple 2 in AmeriCorps Class 20. He arrived in Vinton on February 11 to start his 10-month service term. Maple 2 is made up of nine people from across the country who will serve together around the Midwest. Chris says “I think that service is important. So many people in my community have helped me reach where I am today, and I think I owe it to them to give back and help others reach their full potential.

Edwards, Comisky join Ellsworth Phi Theta Kappa

IOWA FALLS - The Alpha Iota Omega Chapter of Phi Theta Kappa at Ellsworth Community College inducted a record 54 new members last weekend. Phi Theta Kappa is an international honor society for two-year colleges. To qualify for membership, students must be in a degree-seeking program with a cumulative 3.25 grade point average, and have completed a minimum of 12 credit hours.

Area student ranks in top 2 percent in liberal arts and sciences at Iowa State University   An area student has achieved academic ranking in the top 2 percent of students in the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences at Iowa State University.  From Shellsburg,   Noah Lucas Hagen, junior, College of Liberal Arts and Sciences Area students have achieved academic ranking in the top 2 percent of students in the College of Human Sciences at Iowa State University.

Darren Hagen is 2013 December Graduate of Upper Iowa University

Upper Iowa University is pleased to announce Darren Hagen from Newhall, IA, graduated with a Bachelor of Science in Conservation Management in December. Upper Iowa University has 19 U.S. off-campus education centers, a traditional residential campus in Fayette, international centers in Hong Kong and Malaysia, as well as an extensive online program and self-paced degree program.

Vinton Garden Club News

The Vinton Garden Club, member of National Garden Clubs, Inc., District II, and Central Region met 11:30 am February 26, 2014 at Vinton Family Restaurant for lunch with Joyce Bratten as hostess.  After lunch club members went to Joyce’s home for the meeting and program on “Outside Air Quality” by Kaitlin Emerich, MPH, with Linn County Public Health Department.

By Dylan Geater, Club Reporter We opened the meeting revealing what our favorite thing about spring is.  Old business topics:  March is the last month for the stuff animals that are being sent overseas to the soldiers.  The senior service trip has been rescheduled to April and we talked about putting together a committee to work on soldier care packages.

Abigail Darland named an officer in Dordt College Pre-vet Club

Abigail Darland of Vinton, Iowa, was elected to the office of vice president of the Pre-vet Club at Dordt College. Darland is a junior majoring in agriculture with an emphasis in animal science. She also has minors in biology and chemistry. The Pre-Vet Club allows students to network and shadow practicing veterinarians and get behind the scenes access to the Omaha Zoo.
